The town of Saalfeld is a small town, founded in 1190, located on the territory of the federal state of Thuringia. It is attractive with many preserved historical buildings, for which it was called the “stone chronicle of Thuringia”.

In the period of 14-16 centuries the city was the center of ore and various minerals mining. This time is considered the economic prosperity of the city and now the ruins of the fortress and castle Reichsburg Hoyer-Schwarm, which have become a symbol of the city, testify to this. Another attraction of that time, one of the largest churches in the territory of Thuringia, is the Church of St. Johannes, in the galleries of which the historical and art collections of the Franciscan monasteries are kept.

In addition, Saalfeld is, in a way, the gateway to the Thuringian Mountains and the forest, where they are listed in the Guinness Book for the unusual coloring of the Saale grottoes, the most beautiful of which was called the Fairytale Castle.

According to surveys by the Thuringian State Office for Statistics, the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, in which the group of cities is embedded, can list 102 companies with about 9000 employees in the mining and processing industry. The turnover of the larger companies with 20 and more employees is €1.90 million. The export rate has grown to 43.2% in the last four years and is well above the rate for the entire Free State of Thuringia. The GDP per employed person is €60,071.

The traditional industrial and commercial locations are being systematically restructured, further developed and marketed, with their special potential being exhausted. Examples of this are the chemical site ” Rudolstadt-Schwarza Industrial Park “, the Rudolstadt-Ost commercial area, the Bad Blankenburg commercial area or the “Am Bahnbogen Saalfeld” industrial area.

Remarkable settlement successes underline the great attractiveness of these old locations, including BASF Performance Polymers GmbH or the Adolf Jass  GmbH & Co. KG paper factory in the Rudolstadt-Schwarza industrial park and the “Thuringia Steel Works” in Unterwellenborn.

In addition, new commercial areas have been created, e.g. B. in Saalfeld the commercial area ” Alte Kaserne “.

The administration and service sector is also developing steadily. In 2022, 21,178 people were employed in the service sector. In total, a gross domestic product of 2,724 million euros and a gross value added of 2,467 million euros were generated in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in 2020.

With around 2,000 employees including trainees, interns and students, the Thuringia clinics ” Georgius Agricola ” GmbH with locations in Saalfeld, Rudolstadt and Pößneck are among the largest employers in the district. The spa and tourist infrastructure were also expanded. More jobs were created here. The aspired regional development plans to strengthen this economic spectrum.

A sustainable, self-sustaining development is achieved through the establishment of regional economic cycles.

The innovation and start-up center (IGZ) works for innovative start-ups in the immediate vicinity of the Rudolstadt-Schwarza industrial park. It has 4,300 m² of commercial space (can be used flexibly; offices, laboratories, workshops, conference rooms) in modern rooms at favorable conditions and broadband data network access via a high-performance intranet. Business-related research institutions and technology-oriented service providers can be accessed in the immediate vicinity. The IGZ primarily appeals to young, technology-oriented companies and promotes an attractive workplace through optimal framework conditions.

In the IGZ, the administrative district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt and the triangle formed by the towns of Saalebogen bundle all economic promotions under one roof in the economic development agency. A municipal working group was set up specifically for this purpose, which is committed to this purpose. The professional competence is maintained through the secondment of employees from the administration and is supplemented by the competences of the IGZ, especially in business start-up advice and technology promotion.
